Interventions to Protect
Sicklesteel-Newkirk House, c. 1840
ACO Chatham-Kent unsuccessfully supported designation and opposed the granting of a demolition permit. But thanks to ACO intervention, new owner Don Thompson MPP Monte McNaughton, a compromise was reached and the house was moved to a different but appropriate site. It now stands on a new foundation and the back kitchen has been restored with a re-created cook hearth.
In 2021, Don Thompson was nominated for an ACO Heritage Award for his restoration of the building.
